Malaysia Day

Malaysia Day 2010

It was on a field on the top of the Island of Borneo called Padang Merdeka, where after long negotiations, Sabah and Sarawak together with Singapore joined the Federation of Malaya on Sept 16, 1963 to mark the formation of Malaysia. The name Malaysia was not used prior to this date.  The Federation of Malaya (which was the peninsular stretching from Thailand to Singapore) gained independance from the British on the 31st of August 1957 but it was only on the 16th of September 1963 when Malaysia was born.

The increasing integration of Sabah, Sarawak and West Malaysia has enabled Malaysia Day to be celebrated as a national holiday in Malaysia for the first time in 2010.  In recognition of this historic event, the Auckland Malaysian Society has chosen to make the Malaysia Day celebration the theme of our lead event in 2010.  Listed below is the event details.
