The Auckland Malaysian Society Inc was established
in August 1991 by a group of concerned individuals to foster solidarity,
goodwill and maintain the cultural diversity, which Malaysia offers
from its mixed ethnic people. It was also set up to assist and
assimilate new Malaysian migrants into the New Zealand culture.
We have contributed to various charities in New Zealand as part
of our contribution to the New Zealand society. Our members are
predominantly Malaysians but we do have a number of non-Malaysian
members as well. We celebrate the main festivals of Chinese New
Year, Deepavali (Indian), Hari Raya (Muslim), Christmas (Christian)
and Merdeka Day (Independence Day).
Words from the President
Salam Sejahtera, Selamat Hari Raya Idilfitri and Deepavali greetings to everyone.
AMS’ held its DeepaRaya function recently at the Stamford Plaza which was attended by approximately 150 people, including our High Commissioner Dato Sopian and his wife. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank each and every one of you for making the event a success including the committee members who have been planning and organizing the event since August. We also managed to persuade a few more sponsors to support the event and our gratitude goes to the ASB Bank, The National Bank, Malaysian Airlines and Bertelsen Harry Waters Limited (BHW).
The year is marching on hastily that summer is not far away. The winter that had been, has been a winter like never before, perfectly resembling the cliché a winter of discontent the bitter cold exacerbated by rising fuel and food prices and uncertainty facing the global economy. In life, bad times should always be taken with a positive stride otherwise we will not be able to appreciate the good if we had not experienced the bad:.
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. Anne Bradstreet (1612 - 1672), 'Meditations Divine and Moral,' 1655
One of the main thrust of the society this year is to increase its membership. Do you know that there are 14,547 Malaysia born people living in New Zealand (Source: www.treasury.govt.nz/publications/research/policy/wp/2004/04-13/05htm.). Imagine what a lively society we would have if we could encourage 50% of them joined the Society. The more members we have the more vibrant the Society would become. II am calling on every one of you to encourage your acquaintances or any one interested in anything Malaysian to become members of the Society. The society’s membership is open to everyone and not just Malaysians and therefore I would like the alll members to actively encourage their friends and acquaintances to join the Society so we can have larger and merrier events. Till we chat again.
Terima Kasih
